Engel & Völkers hosts Polo Cup in Majorca
- More than 450 international guests gather for the occasion at Christian
Völkers’ private country estate
Christian Völkers, CEO and Founder of Engel & Völkers AG, extended an invitation to the Engel & Völkers Polo Cup on Majorca on 14 July. Around 450 international guests, including members of the ruling family of Qatar and well-known figures from the worlds of politics, media, culture, business, and sport, all convened for the occasion at the private finca “Son Coll” owned by the real estate entrepreneur. Last Saturday marked the fourth time that the Polo Cup was held on Christian Völkers’ private estate, which is situated in Port d’es Canonge on the southwest coast of Majorca. “It was a pleasure to welcome so many guests to this sporting event at “Son Coll”,” said Christian Völkers, who has been actively and passionately involved in the game of polo for many years. “It forms the perfect counterbalance to my working life and is also an occasion that I can share with my family and my friends,” Mr. Völkers added.
“It’s time to share”: Guests donate more than 11.000 euro to the E&V Charity
This year’s polo tournament was under the aegis of the Engel & Völkers Charity, founded in 2008, and carried the motto “It’s time to share.” In total, more than 11.000 Euros were collected. All proceeds and donations will go directly toward the primary school project in Togo, one of the poorest countries in the world. These latest donation will contribute to ensuring the ongoing expansion of the school and the payment of running costs.
High-speed spectacle in front of a sensational backdrop
Human and animal agility combine to form a strong team that interacts with one another in constant dynamic flux. The game is all about speed and precision. The historic “Son Coll” estate makes for a tranquil contrast to this energetic display. The tournament took place in glorious sunshine, set against a spectacular backdrop with views overlooking the Mediterranean and surrounding vineyards. A total of six top-class teams of three players each competed against one another. More than 60 horses had been transported by ferry from the Spanish mainland or by transporter from Germany for the tournament at “Son Coll.” The teams were put forward by the sponsors Villa Eden – an exclusive resort at Lake Garda, designed by world renowned architects like Sir David Chipperfield –, Bucherer, Rolls-Royce, the vineyard Son Campaner, Gira, and Engel & Völkers, respectively.
The top international players present included Gastón Maíquez, Daniel Crasemann, Christopher Kirsch, and Oliver and Christopher Winter, all good friends of Christian Völkers. The Winter family is one of the most famous polo-playing families in Germany. The host Christian Völkers also played himself on all three tournament days in the Engel & Völkers team. After the pre-rounds on Thursday and Friday, the semi-final and final were then held on Saturday. At the end of the sporting contest, the Rolls-Royce team emerged as the overall winner and was then presented with the coveted Engel & Völkers Polo Cup trophy. Polo enthusiasts, celebrities, and friends followed the tournament from the sidelines, all clothed according to the dress code “summer whites”.
Spirited finale with an Argentinean asado and estate-grown wine
Afterward the polo tournament, an asado – an Argentinean-style barbecue – was held in the finca gardens, where guests were treated to wine produced on the estate and South American specialities. Christian Völkers’ historic finca lies directly in the beautiful “Serra de Tramuntana” mountain range. The Hamburg-based entrepreneur has painstakingly restored the property “Son Coll”, which is more than 500 years old, taking great care to preserve the original character of its ancient walls. For almost 20 years he has also been growing wine on his traditional estate. Sheep, donkeys, and dogs also reside within the grounds, in addition to 16 polo ponies, some of which originate from Argentina and some of which have been bred on the estate.
